L1.54 A/V-(으)면 grammar = if, when ~express a supposition or a condition about a fact or something occurred repeatedly
Usage:
- Express a supposition or a condition about a fact or something occurred repeatedly = if, when
- Past tense can’t come before -(으)면.
- When expressing a supposition, 혹시, 만약 and 만일 can also be used to emphasize the supposition. (example 7)
- When the subjects of the 1st and 2nd clauses are different, the particle following the subject of the 1st clause changes from 은/는 to 이/가. (example 5)
Verb/ Adjective ending in vowel or ㄹ + 면:
가다 → 가면 (If we go...)
바쁘다 → 바쁘면 (If it is bad ...)
만나다 → 만나면 (If we meet...)
공부하다 → 공부하면 (If I study...)
*살다 → 살면 (If I live...)
*만들다 → 만들면 (If I make...)
Verb/ Adjective ending in consonant + 으면:
먹다 → 먹으면 (If I eat...)
있다 → 있으면 (If I have...)
*듣다 → 들으면 (If I listen...)
*덥다 → 더우면 (If it is hot...)
*낫다 → 나으면 (If it is better...)
*짓다 → 지으면 (If they build...)
Examples
1. 컴퓨터를 많이 하면 눈이 아파요.
If you send too much time on computer, you will hurt your eyes.
2. 나는 기분이 좋으면 춤을 춰요.
When I am in a good mood, I dance.
3. 돈을 많이 벌면 새로운 자동차를 살 거예요.
If I make a lot of money, I will buy a new car.
4. 어제 영화를 보면 울었어요. (x) → 어제 영화를 볼 때 울었어요. (o)
I cried when I watched a movie yesterday.
5. 동생이 이야기하면 친구들이 웃어요.
When my brother tells a story, his friends laugh.
6. 주말에 보통 뭐 해요?
- 날씨가 좋으면 등산을 해요.
What do you normally do on the weekend?
- If the weather is nice, I go hiking.
7. 만약 결혼하면 어디에서 살 거예요?
- 회사 근처 아파트에서 살려고 해요.
When will you live once you get married?
- I plan to live in an apartment near the company.
8. 이번 달월급을 받으면 새 스마트폰을 살 거예요.
When I get my salary this month, I am going to buy a new smartphone.
9. 수업이 일찍 끝나면 뭐할 거예요?
If the class finishes early, what are you going to do?
10. 날씨가 좋으면 사진 찍으러 가요.
If the weather is nice, we are going to take some pictures.
11. 취직하면 한턱 낼게요.
If I get a job, I will treat you.
